Speaker Bio
Robert Powers is the founder and college consultant at College Torch, his educational firm in Sierra Madre, CA, where he guides students through the college search and application process.

Robert is a dork about colleges. He loves traveling across the country, meeting admissions representatives and current students, and learning about the programs, scholarships, communities, initiatives, and changes at college campuses. In addition to being a college expert, he is an expert in the application process, guiding students to their favorite schools year after year.

Robert Powers is an expert on the LGBTQ+ college search and a national advocate for LGBTQ+ students. He is currently writing the chapter on LGBTQ+ students for the upcoming sixth edition of NACAC's textbook Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling. He owns his own college counseling firm, College Torch, where he guides students through the college search and application process. Around 50% of Robert’s students identify as LGBTQ+.

Outside of College Torch, Robert cofounded IECs for Human Rights, the only grassroots, direct-action advocacy organization for independent college counselors. Robert recently moderated a session on behalf of IECs for Human Rights at the NACAC national college counseling conference, where experts in journalism and Title IX spoke directly to colleges about how they can protect their students and resist hateful state laws.

This year, Robert was awarded a grant from the National Pride Fund to complete a large-scale project that will be a resource for LGBTQ+ students nationally to connect with truly up-to-date information about LGBTQ+ experiences on individual college campuses. Follow College Torch and watch for more information later this year about the project’s release.
